The job of a carpenter often involves the use of expensive and essential tools. Knowing this, robbers had twice successfully targeted a North Virginia carpenter, stealing valuable tools from his van. Refusing to be a victim for the third time, the carpenter turned to technology for a solution. He strategically placed AirTags in several larger tools, turning them into inconspicuous tracking devices.
On January 22, the carpenter’s foresight paid off. The thieves struck again, making off with 50 tools. Little did they know, some of these tools were now trackable thanks to the hidden AirTags. Using his iPhone, the carpenter pinpointed the stolen items to a storage facility in Howard County. Rather than confronting the thieves directly—a move that often leads to dangerous outcomes—he wisely involved law enforcement.
The police operation unearthed not just the carpenter’s stolen tools, but a veritable goldmine of ill-gotten goods. The investigation uncovered 12 storage units filled with over 15,000 stolen tools from various thefts in North Virginia and Pennsylvania. Though the suspected thieves remain at large, Howard County Police Chief Gregory Der, as quoted by The Washington Post, assured continued efforts in tracking down the culprits.
