Apple’s next AirPods Pro could blur the line between audio and visual awareness, at least if the latest round of leaks turns out to be true. Multiple rumors suggest Apple is working on AirPods Pro earbuds with embedded infrared cameras—tiny sensors that could “see” the space around you and use that information to make spatial audio feel more realistic and precisely positioned.
The claim gaining traction is that each earbud may include at least one infrared (IR) camera. A leaker on X known as Kosutami says these sensors would analyze the wearer’s surroundings to enhance spatial audio. In practice, that could mean sound placement that better matches the real world as you move your head, walk through a room, or change your orientation—especially when paired with Apple’s spatial computing headset, the Apple Vision Pro.
This idea isn’t coming out of nowhere. Back in 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was developing AirPods with infrared cameras and pointed to 2026 as the likely timeframe. In 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also reported Apple was considering adding IR cameras to AirPods in the near future. Another tipster, Instant Digital, has also suggested an infrared-equipped AirPods Pro could arrive as soon as this year—though timing remains one of the biggest question marks.
What these infrared cameras would actually do is still up for debate. One camp believes the sensors are mainly for better spatial audio, helping the earbuds understand the environment and potentially improving how audio is rendered in mixed-reality experiences. Another theory is that the cameras could enable new gesture controls. Today’s AirPods already support subtle interactions like nodding or shaking your head to handle calls, and IR sensors could expand that approach into broader, more reliable hand and movement detection.
It’s important to treat all of this as rumor for now. Apple hasn’t confirmed any AirPods Pro model with cameras, and it’s unclear whether these sensors would appear in a completely new AirPods Pro generation or a revised version of an upcoming model. Still, the repeated mentions from multiple sources over multiple years suggest Apple is at least exploring the concept—potentially setting up the next AirPods Pro to do more than just deliver great sound.
