AI Summaries Coming to WhatsApp: A Meta Innovation

Meta recently unveiled an exciting AI-driven feature for WhatsApp that aims to make catching up on unread messages a breeze. This innovative tool automatically summarizes messages in a chat, providing users with a quick snapshot of what they’ve missed. Importantly, these summaries are private and only visible to the individual user.

This development builds on Meta’s previous AI innovations, which prioritize user privacy and encryption. The company emphasizes that “Message Summaries” uses Private Processing technology. This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view your messages or summaries, maintaining complete confidentiality. Moreover, no one else in the chat will know you’ve utilized this feature.

While this tool is turned off by default, WhatsApp will display an icon indicating its availability. Initially, it’s being introduced in the U.S. with support for English, but more countries and languages are expected to gain access later this year.

Previously, users could interact with Meta AI to ask general questions or tag messages for context, although the AI couldn’t independently read messages. Now, thanks to a new technological stack, WhatsApp can privately access chat context to help process requests, whether it’s summarizing conversations or offering writing suggestions.

These enhancements can be managed through a new setting found by navigating to Settings > Chats > Private Processing, allowing users to tailor the features to their preferences.
