A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California, Riverside and the California Institute of Technology sheds light on the potential health risks that artificial intelligence may pose in the coming years. Published on December 9, the report forecasts that by 2030, air pollution linked to AI’s substantial energy requirements could lead to 1,300 premature deaths annually within the United States. The alarming prediction stems from the vast energy demands that AI models necessitate, largely dependent on fossil-fueled power sources, which significantly contribute to air pollution.
Communities with lower income levels are expected to bear the brunt of these emissions, as many are situated close to power plants, industrial facilities, or data centers. These areas face significantly higher exposure to pollutants, with levels reaching up to 200 times more than those in areas with better air quality.
The potential rise in healthcare costs adds another layer of concern. By 2030, treatment expenses related to conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive decline could soar to $20 billion per year. This is notably higher than the current emission-related healthcare expenditure from coal-based steel production in the U.S.
In response to these findings, the researchers advocate for the establishment of a standardized system to track pollution emissions from AI technologies, alongside their health implications. Furthermore, they highlight the need for prioritizing support for disadvantaged communities through compensation strategies. Developing AI systems that are health-conscious, balancing technological advancement with environmental and health impact considerations, is deemed essential for mitigating long-term damage.

It provides substantial opportunities for advancing medical practices, such as assisting doctors in making more precise and quicker diagnoses, ultimately contributing to saving lives.
