Recently, a fascinating study examined the performance of these models in terms of emotional intelligence, delivering surprising results.
In this study conducted by researchers from the University of Geneva and the University of Bern, findings suggested that AI might process and understand human emotions more effectively than people themselves. This discovery has sparked interest in how artificial intelligence can enhance efficiency and be integrated into different institutional settings. Published in Communications Psychology, the study revealed that generative AI models like ChatGPT not only exhibit emotional intelligence but also outperform humans in specific tests. The research assessed six leading language models: ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-o1, Gemini 1.5 Flash, Claude 3.5 Haiku, Copilot 365, and DeepSeek V3. These models were put through five emotional tests commonly used in academic and professional settings to measure emotional understanding, regulation, and management. The emotionally charged scenarios revealed that the AI models significantly outperformed human participants.
The researchers further explored the capabilities of these models by having ChatGPT-4 design new emotional intelligence test items. Human participants validated these items, and yet again, the AI models demonstrated impressive contextual understanding. Senior Researcher Marcello Mortillaro commented on the outcomes, noting that large language models like ChatGPT can not only identify the best answers but also generate new scenarios tailored to specific contexts. This highlights the emotional reasoning capabilities of AI.
