Activision Reportedly Blocks Halo Studios Chief, Leaving Future Projects in Doubt

Activision Reportedly Takes Over the Next Mainline Halo Game as Halo Studios’ Future Becomes Uncertain

Microsoft’s plans for the Halo franchise appear to be shifting in a major way. Following reported development setbacks and internal restructuring, Xbox has reportedly handed responsibility for the next mainline Halo game to Activision, marking a dramatic turn for one of gaming’s most iconic shooter series.

The move suggests Microsoft is looking for a fresh production approach after years of uncertainty surrounding Halo’s future. However, the transition may not be as simple as assigning a new team to the franchise. Halo Studios boss Pierre Hintze is reportedly still trying to keep some influence over upcoming projects, despite Activision allegedly having little interest in working with him.

According to claims from gaming insider Rebs Gaming, Halo Studios has been reduced significantly, with roughly 30 employees remaining after the latest changes. Xbox executive Matt Booty is said to have allowed Hintze to keep a smaller group of developers close to him, described as part of his “inner circle.”

Before the restructuring, several Halo projects were reportedly in early development. These included remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3, along with a planned seventh mainline entry in the series. A separate project based on the First Strike novel was also said to be in the works, positioned to release between Campaign Evolved and a later remake.

Most of these projects were apparently still years away from launch, and their future now appears unclear.

Hintze reportedly believes smaller Halo releases could still be developed through a combination of outsourcing and generative AI tools. However, that plan may face resistance if Activision is fully leading the next major Halo title. Sources cited by Rebs Gaming suggest Activision does not want to collaborate with Hintze, which could create tension behind the scenes as Microsoft reorganizes the franchise.

Microsoft’s public messaging indicates that a new team within Activision will be responsible for the next Halo game. What remains unknown is whether this project will use ideas from the previously planned Halo 7 or become something entirely new.

The situation has left fans wondering whether long-rumored remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 will still happen. For now, those projects are believed to be on hold, along with the seventh mainline installment that Halo Studios had been developing in some form.

Questions are also being raised about leadership and accountability within Halo Studios. Hintze has faced allegations involving poor workplace behavior, including claims of verbal abuse and favoritism. These accusations, combined with the slow pace of development, have led some fans and insiders to question why Microsoft has not made a cleaner break from the studio’s existing leadership.

Even with Activision involved, players may need to be patient. A new Halo game under a different team could take time, especially if Microsoft wants to avoid repeating past mistakes. While Activision has experience managing large-scale shooter franchises, building a new Halo that satisfies longtime fans and modern players will be a major challenge.

For now, the future of Halo appears to be in a holding pattern. Activision may be preparing the next big chapter, Halo Studios may still be trying to keep certain projects alive, and Microsoft seems focused on resetting the franchise after years of uneven momentum.

What is clear is that Halo is entering one of the most important periods in its history. Whether this shift leads to a stronger comeback or more delays will depend on how Microsoft, Xbox, Activision, and Halo Studios navigate the franchise’s next phase.
