The concept mirrors that of Community Notes found on the social media platform X and aims to clarify content such as parodies or to indicate the actual date of an older footage presented as recent.
This initiative is timely, considering the anticipated challenges of misinformation particularly in an election year. Misinformation was rampant during the 2020 presidential campaign, and with the advancements in generative AI, the 2024 elections could see even more. YouTube is initiating this feature to potentially curb the dissemination of false information on its platform.
At the outset, the experimental feature is being rolled out on mobile in the United States for those who use the platform in English. While YouTube is aware that the testing phase may encounter hiccups, including mismatched or incorrect notes, the platform is open to community feedback to refine the quality of the notes shared by viewers and creators.
The initial testing will invite only a select group of users who run an active and reputable YouTube channel to contribute notes. As the testing advances, American viewers will gradually see notes appear on video content. During this initial stage, third-party evaluators will assess notes’ usefulness and accuracy, aiding YouTube’s algorithms to learn and adapt.
If evaluators deem the notes beneficial, they will be displayed beneath the video, prompting viewers to rate them based on helpfulness and provide reasons for their judgment. Factors such as citation quality or neutrality in writing could influence viewer assessment.
YouTube will utilize an algorithm to decide on the publication of notes, determined largely by their reception from the community.
