Google rolls out safeguards for more of its AI products ahead of the US presidential election

Google Enhances AI Protections in Preparation for Upcoming US Presidential Election

Google is preparing for the upcoming U.S. presidential election by adding new safeguards to more of its generative AI products. Initially, the company announced restrictions on Gemini queries related to the election. Now, Google is extending these restrictions to additional generative AI products.

The new safeguards will cover Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems, and image generation in Gemini. These AI products will no longer respond to election-related topics.

Google recognizes that generative AI, being relatively new, is susceptible to errors. To prevent the spread of misinformation around the election, it is implementing these restrictions.

Laurie Richardson, Google’s vice president of trust and safety, emphasized in a blog post the importance of providing reliable and up-to-date information during federal and state-wide elections. She noted that users depend on Google for accurate details on current candidates, voting processes, and election results, and highlighted the potential for mistakes as the AI technology learns and news evolves.

Misinformation was a major issue during the 2020 presidential election, and the rise of generative AI could exacerbate this problem in the 2024 election. By announcing these changes, Google aims to mitigate the risks of misinformation early on.

Additionally, Google Search will offer a feature to help people find information about voter registration. YouTube will introduce new features to help users access credible information about election candidates and their political parties. As the election approaches, YouTube will begin displaying reminders about voting locations and procedures.

To further assist in finding reliable election information, Google Play has introduced a new badge that will appear on apps from official government agencies.
