Last year, YouTube introduced an exciting feature for select creators in the U.S., allowing them to craft AI-generated songs using the voices of famous artists like Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan. Now, they’re upping the game with a brand new feature that lets creators remix tracks simply by describing the style transformation they envision.
This latest innovation offers creators the opportunity to work with specific songs provided through YouTube’s label partners as part of a unique remixing experiment. If a creator is selected for the test group, they can choose a song, opt for the “Restyle a track” feature, and articulate how they’d like to alter the song’s style. This will produce a 30-second sound bite that can be incorporated into their Shorts.
According to information available on a support page, Google has clarified that each remixed sound snippet will carry attribution to the original work in both the Short and the Shorts audio pivot page. Additionally, it will feature a label highlighting that the track was modified using AI technology.
In November 2023, YouTube unveiled a feature named Dream Track, leveraging a music generation model called Lyrica, developed by Deepmind. They also introduced a tool enabling users to create music just by humming a tune.
YouTube has emphasized that these experiments delve into the potential of AI to amplify artists’ and creators’ imaginations, enriching the creative process. This connects fans to their favorite creators in novel ways, fostering greater interaction and engagement through innovative tools and experiences. By progressively refining the technology, YouTube intends to shape its future applications.
Anticipating potential concerns from the music industry, YouTube announced plans back in August to ensure artists and rights holders are compensated for their contributions to AI-generated content. In this context, YouTube has partnered with Universal Music Group to develop a framework that ensures fair compensation.
However, YouTube isn’t the only player in the field offering avenues for track remixing. Gaurav Sharma, a former JioSaavn executive, is developing an app named Hook. This app aims to offer a legal platform for remixing songs, which could then be leveraged to produce short videos. As technology advances, the creativity it enables continues to open new doors for both artists and fans alike.
