Xiaomi has expanded its product lineup with the introduction of the MiTu S1 smartwatch, a wearable device specifically crafted for the younger demographic and their parents. The MiTu S1 stands out with its array of security features and health tracking capabilities.
The smartwatch sports a vibrant 1.78-inch display, producing sharp visuals with a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels. An innovative aspect of the MiTu S1 is its detachable design; the watch module can be removed from its strap and used separately, providing versatility by being worn as a handheld device or as a necklace pendant.
Understanding the need for reliable connectivity, Xiaomi has equipped the MiTu S1 with 4G LTE support alongside dual-frequency GPS tracking. This enables parents to monitor their child’s whereabouts with precision. In addition, the smartwatch stores up to 90 days of location history and offers a function to record locations offline for later retrieval when the watch reconnects to a network.
The MiTu S1 pushes the boundary of typical smartwatches for kids by incorporating two high-definition cameras—a 5MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear camera. These enable children to make video calls and capture moments through photos. Enhanced video call features such as camera switching and showing real-time location during a call are introduced in Video Call 2.0.
Health and wellness monitoring are key components of the MiTu S1, with abilities to track heart rate and blood oxygen levels. These health metrics are easily accessible through the designated app. In addition to health tracking, the device can recognize and notify parents of possible signs of their child’s fatigue or stress.
For the active child, the watch offers extensive activity logging with its K12 sports assistant that supports 18 different types of exercises and five fitness tests, promoting a healthy lifestyle from a young age.
Entertainment and functionality aren’t compromised, as the smartwatch comes with child-friendly versions of popular apps like WeChat and QQ. With 8GB of storage capacity, there is ample space to download a variety of applications.
One highlight of the Xiaomi MiTu S1 smartwatch is its battery life. Despite housing a 702 mAh battery, Xiaomi claims a quick six-minute charge is sufficient to power the device for a full day, ensuring parents and kids avoid frequent charging.
Currently, the MiTu S1 is available for purchase in China, with an introductory price of 1,199 yuan, roughly equivalent to $169. Its regular retail price is set at 1,299 yuan, or about $183. While Xiaomi has not yet disclosed plans to release the MiTu S1 smartwatch globally, such as to European markets where Xiaomi products like the Watch S3 are already available, the brand’s track record suggests it may broaden its reach in the near future.
