Xiaomi Pad 9 Debuts as a Budget-Friendly iPad Air Alternative With a 144Hz Display
Xiaomi has introduced the Pad 9 series in China alongside its latest flagship smartphones, and the standard Xiaomi Pad 9 is shaping up to be one of the brand’s most interesting tablet releases yet. With a bright high-refresh-rate screen, strong performance hardware, stylus support, and a competitive starting price, the tablet appears aimed directly at buyers who want an iPad Air-style experience without paying premium Apple pricing.
The Xiaomi Pad 9 features an 11.2-inch IPS display with a sharp 3200 x 2136 resolution and a smooth 144Hz refresh rate. The screen also supports Dolby Vision, 12-bit color depth, DC dimming, and up to 800 nits of peak brightness. These specs make it a strong option for streaming movies, browsing, reading, gaming, and creative work. While an OLED panel would have made it even more competitive, the display still looks impressive for its price range.
Powering the tablet is the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, an upper-mid-range chipset designed to deliver reliable performance for everyday use. It is paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5T RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage. Although it does not match the raw power of the Apple M4 chip found in the latest iPad Air models, the Xiaomi Pad 9 should be more than capable of handling multitasking, video playback, note-taking, productivity apps, and light to moderate gaming.
One drawback is the lack of a microSD card slot, meaning users cannot expand storage internally. However, Xiaomi includes a USB-C port based on the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard, offering transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. This allows users to connect external storage devices when they need more space for files, videos, photos, or work documents.
Xiaomi is also positioning the Pad 9 as a productivity-focused tablet. The device supports PC-level professional apps and works with the Focus Stylus Pro 12, which offers 16,384 levels of pressure sensitivity. That makes it suitable for drawing, handwritten notes, document editing, and other creative tasks. For students, professionals, and digital artists looking for a capable Android tablet, this could be one of the more appealing options in its category.
The tablet also comes with a slim design, a large 9,720mAh battery, and 45W fast charging support. For entertainment, Xiaomi has included a quad-speaker setup, while wireless connectivity is upgraded with WiFi 7 support. These features help make the Pad 9 a well-rounded device for both work and media consumption.
In China, the Xiaomi Pad 9 starts at CNY 2,999, which is roughly $447. The highest-end configuration is priced at CNY 3,799, or around $566. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed global availability, but the tablet is expected to launch internationally at a later date, possibly alongside the Xiaomi 18 Pro.
With its 144Hz display, strong Snapdragon chip, stylus compatibility, large battery, and attractive pricing, the Xiaomi Pad 9 could become a serious alternative to the 11-inch iPad Air for users who want a powerful tablet at a more affordable price.
