Xiaomi 17 Pro Max leak hints at a major camera edge over the Pro flagship

Xiaomi’s 17 series is tipped to arrive later in September 2025, and the company has already teased a refreshed rear design for the Pro models. Now, a new leak from the reliable Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station sheds light on what to expect from the cameras, especially on the top-end Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

According to the leak, the 17 Pro Max keeps the same main and ultrawide cameras as the standard 17 Pro. That means a 50 MP primary sensor with an f/1.67 aperture and an ultrawide lens with a 17 mm focal length are on the cards.

Where the Pro Max pulls ahead is the telephoto. The regular 17 Pro is said to feature a 5x telephoto with an f/3.0 aperture and a 115 mm equivalent focal length. The 17 Pro Max reportedly upgrades the telephoto’s aperture to f/2.6 while maintaining the same 115 mm equivalent focal length.

That seemingly small aperture change could make a big difference. A brighter f/2.6 lens should capture more light, enabling cleaner low-light shots, faster shutter speeds, and less noise at long range compared to the f/3.0 setup on the 17 Pro. In practical terms, expect improved night and indoor zoom performance from the Pro Max.

There is a trade-off when you compare it with the previous generation, though. The Xiaomi 15 Pro’s telephoto offered a slightly longer 120 mm equivalent focal length. A longer focal length can deliver stronger subject separation and a shallower depth of field, which is great for portraits and certain macro-style shots. By sticking with 115 mm, the 17 Pro Max may offer a touch less compression and background blur, but it should provide a slightly deeper depth of field that can be advantageous for zoomed landscapes and scenes where you want more of the frame in focus.

Details like sensor size and resolution for the ultrawide and telephoto modules remain under wraps, and those factors will heavily influence real-world results. Expect more specifics to surface as the launch window approaches.

If these leaked specs hold, Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max looks set to prioritize better low-light zoom performance without radically changing the overall camera formula, while the standard 17 Pro should share most of the imaging DNA with a modestly dimmer telephoto. As always with pre-launch information, final hardware could change, but the direction is clear: a brighter telephoto is the headline upgrade for the Pro Max in the Xiaomi 17 lineup.
