Xbox Mythic Achievements: New Reward System Gives Completionists a Fresh Reason to Celebrate
Microsoft is preparing a major upgrade for Xbox achievement hunters with the introduction of Mythic Achievements, a new badge-style reward designed to recognize players who fully complete a game’s original achievement list.
The new system is aimed at players who love chasing 100% completion. A game earns Mythic status when every achievement available at launch has been unlocked. Any achievements added later through DLC, expansions, seasonal updates, or post-launch content will not be required for Mythic completion. Instead, those additional challenges will be categorized separately as Add-on achievements.
One of the most player-friendly parts of the system is that Mythic status is permanent. If a player completes the original achievement list and earns the Mythic distinction, the game will keep that status even if developers add more achievements in the future. This should help prevent the frustration many completionists feel when a finished game suddenly drops below 100% after a new update.
Microsoft is also redesigning how achievements appear on Xbox profiles. A new Gaming tab will organize achievements, completed games, and Mythic awards in one place. Players will also be able to see how close they are to reaching their next Gamerscore milestone.
Games with Mythic status will stand out with a more noticeable border, making completed titles easier to spot. For games that are not yet fully completed, Xbox will display a progress bar showing how close the player is to earning Mythic recognition.
A major bonus for longtime Xbox fans is that Mythic Achievements will work retroactively. That means games completed years ago can automatically receive Mythic status once the feature becomes available. Microsoft has also confirmed that this includes Xbox 360 games, which could make the update especially exciting for veteran players with years of completed titles in their libraries.
For achievement hunters who have spent countless hours finishing games across multiple Xbox generations, this could result in several Mythic awards appearing on their profiles as soon as the system rolls out.
At the moment, the feature is not available to all Xbox users. It is currently being tested through the Xbox Insider program, and the rollout appears to be happening gradually. Microsoft has not yet confirmed when Mythic Achievements and the updated Gaming tab will launch for everyone.
Community reaction has been largely positive so far. Many players are praising the cleaner presentation, the special unlock sound, and the fact that older completed games will also be recognized. For completionists, the system adds a new layer of satisfaction without forcing them to revisit games every time new downloadable content arrives.
Still, some players have shared suggestions for improvement. A common request is for Mythic Achievements to include a Gamerscore bonus as an extra reward. Others point out that earning 100% completion can vary wildly from game to game, with some titles taking only a few hours while others demand hundreds of hours of dedication.
The biggest complaint is not about the feature itself, but about availability. Some Xbox players are frustrated that the update is currently limited to Insiders, with no clear public release date.
Even so, Mythic Achievements could become one of the most appreciated Xbox profile upgrades in years. By giving completed games a permanent and visible distinction, Microsoft is offering achievement hunters a better way to show off their dedication, their history, and their hardest-earned gaming accomplishments.
