Microsoft Phone Link May Soon Let Android Users Shut Down or Restart Windows 11 PCs Remotely
Microsoft’s Phone Link app is already one of the most useful built-in tools for Windows 11 users who also own an Android phone. The app makes it easy to view phone notifications on a PC, send and receive messages, access photos, and even make or answer calls directly from a desktop or laptop.
Now, Microsoft appears to be preparing an even more convenient feature: the ability to remotely shut down or restart a Windows 11 PC from an Android smartphone.
Newly discovered references inside the Phone Link app suggest that Microsoft is working on remote PC controls for Android users. These internal strings point to options such as “Restart” and “Shut down,” meaning users may soon be able to manage basic power controls on their Windows 11 computer without needing to be physically in front of it.
The feature could be especially useful for people who leave their PC running in another room, use a desktop connected to a TV, manage a home office setup, or simply want quick access to power controls from their phone. Instead of walking over to the machine, users could potentially open Phone Link on Android and restart or turn off their Windows 11 device remotely.
The discovered references also hint at more advanced options, including “Update and restart” and “Update and shut down.” If Microsoft enables these controls, Android users may be able to trigger Windows updates and power actions from their phone. That could make routine maintenance easier, especially for users who want to apply updates after finishing work without returning to their PC.
A sleep option may also be in development for Phone Link. However, there appears to be an important limitation. If a Windows 11 PC is placed into sleep mode, remote connectivity may be interrupted until the device is unlocked again. That means users may not be able to restart or shut down the computer remotely after sleep mode is activated, depending on how Microsoft implements the feature.
This upcoming Phone Link upgrade would fit into Microsoft’s broader effort to make Windows 11 feel more connected across devices. While Phone Link has already become a strong bridge between Android phones and Windows PCs, remote power controls would add another layer of convenience for everyday users.
There is currently no official release date for the remote shutdown and restart feature. It may arrive in a future Windows 11 or Phone Link update, but Microsoft has not yet confirmed when Android users will get access to it.
If it launches widely, this could become one of the most practical Phone Link features yet, giving Android users more control over their Windows 11 PCs directly from the palm of their hand.
