Smart #2 Couture Edition Sells Out in Europe Just Two Weeks After Pre-Orders Open
The new Smart #2 is already proving to be one of the most talked-about compact electric cars in Europe. Just two weeks after pre-orders opened, the limited-run Smart #2 Couture Edition has completely sold out, with all 999 units reserved by buyers across the continent.
That rapid sellout is especially notable because most customers have not yet seen the car in person. The Smart #2 was first shown at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, with European pre-orders beginning the following day. Deliveries are not expected to start until the second quarter of 2027, yet demand has already been strong enough to clear the entire Couture Edition allocation.
A big part of the excitement comes from what the Smart #2 represents: a return to the brand’s original city-car formula. After launching larger models such as the Smart #1, Smart #3 and Smart #5, the company is now going back to its roots with a true two-seat urban electric vehicle. For many buyers, the appeal is simple: a small, stylish EV built for tight streets, easy parking and everyday city driving.
The Smart #2 measures just 2.75 meters, or around 9 feet, in length. That makes it significantly smaller than most modern electric cars and ideal for crowded European cities. Its tight 6.95-meter turning circle should make it especially easy to maneuver through narrow roads, compact parking spaces and busy urban areas.
Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 82 hp, or 60 kW, and 130 Nm of torque. While it is not designed as a performance EV, those figures should be more than enough for city commuting and short regional trips. The car uses a 35.8-kWh battery, with an expected WLTP range of up to 290 kilometers, or about 180 miles.
Charging should also be convenient for daily use. The Smart #2 supports DC fast charging at up to 65 kW, allowing the battery to go from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes under ideal conditions. For a compact electric city car, that makes it practical not only for urban drivers but also for those who occasionally need a quick top-up on the move.
The sold-out Couture Edition adds a more premium and exclusive look to the small EV. It features matte white paint, a gold-colored roof and 16-inch alloy wheels with matching gold accents. Other equipment includes a fixed glass roof, heated seats and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
Its limited availability likely helped fuel the rush. With only 999 units offered across Europe, the Couture Edition was aimed at buyers who wanted something more distinctive than the standard model. The combination of compact size, retro-inspired positioning, electric efficiency and exclusive styling appears to have hit the right note.
For buyers who missed out on the Couture Edition, the regular Smart #2 lineup is still available to pre-order. The three main variants are Pure, Pure+ and Premium. Pricing starts at €19,990 for the entry-level model, approximately $22,400. The Pure+ starts at €20,990, around $23,500, while the Premium version begins at €24,490, roughly $27,400.
Early interest in the standard Smart #2 versions is also said to be strong, although official sales numbers for those trims have not yet been shared. If demand continues at this pace, Smart may have found exactly what many urban EV buyers have been waiting for: a modern electric successor to the classic two-seat city car.
The strong response to the Smart #2 Couture Edition suggests that small electric cars still have a major role to play in Europe. As many EVs continue to grow larger, heavier and more expensive, the Smart #2 stands out by focusing on compact dimensions, efficient driving and city-friendly practicality. For drivers who want an affordable electric car built for urban life, the Smart #2 could become one of the most interesting launches to watch ahead of its 2027 arrival.
