The race to build the first true AI phone is heating up, and StepX may have just moved ahead of some of the biggest names in technology. While Apple and OpenAI are reportedly caught in a dispute over alleged technology theft linked to future AI hardware, StepX has teased its upcoming Neo smartphone, a device designed around a native AI agent and a new operating system built for artificial intelligence from the ground up.
The StepX Neo is being positioned as an “agentic phone,” meaning it is not just another smartphone with a chatbot installed. Instead, the device is said to use an AI-first system that can understand commands, move across apps, complete tasks, and assist users in real time. If the company delivers on these claims, Neo could become one of the first smartphones to push beyond traditional app-based interaction and toward a more assistant-driven mobile experience.
According to the information shared so far, the StepX Neo runs on Step AOS, a native operating system created to support AI-powered workflows. At the center of the experience is Amoo, the built-in AI agent designed to operate across the system. Rather than forcing users to open individual apps for every task, Amoo is expected to help manage actions across multiple services, making the phone feel more like a proactive digital assistant than a standard mobile device.
This direction is important because many technology companies are now trying to define what comes after the traditional smartphone. OpenAI has reportedly explored several consumer AI hardware concepts, including AI-powered earbuds and a pen-shaped smart device. More recently, attention has shifted toward the idea of an AI phone that blends on-device intelligence with cloud-based models to help users handle productivity tasks, communication, scheduling, and other everyday needs.
