Apple’s lack of strides in AI development might not shake their earnings for Q2 2025, but it’s stirring concern among shareholders. Rumors about CEO Tim Cook’s possible replacement have surfaced, as the company faces scrutiny for its slow progress in this realm. Analysts suggest that Apple’s internal efforts won’t suffice, and with its substantial cash reserves, the tech giant could consider acquiring a successful AI company like Perplexity for $40 billion to gain a competitive edge.
Discussions on acquiring Perplexity have been speculated, but Apple’s current stance remains unclear. Later today, the company is expected to discuss its AI initiatives, hinting at advanced features set for release next year. Analysts believe Apple may need external assistance to keep pace with industry leaders, and acquiring Perplexity’s robust AI platform could be the solution.
While developing internally might be more cost-effective, there’s no assurance of success. Previously, Apple was reported to be considering Perplexity, valued at $14 billion then. Paying $40 billion is astronomical, especially considering Apple’s most expensive acquisition was Beats for $3 billion, indicating potential reluctance to spend heavily on a single entity.
Whether Apple proceeds with this deal remains uncertain. Even under shareholder pressure, Tim Cook is likely to have support from loyal board members to counteract any forced decisions.
