Waveshare launches NFC-powered e-paper display that needs no battery or cables
Waveshare has introduced a compact 2.9-inch e-paper display that can update its screen without a built-in battery, charging port, or wired power connection. Instead, the display uses NFC to receive both the image data and the energy needed to refresh its content.
The idea takes advantage of one of e-paper technology’s biggest strengths: it only needs power when the image changes. Once the digital ink has been rearranged, the screen can continue showing the same content for an extended period without staying connected to power. In many cases, an e-paper image can remain visible for months, making this type of display ideal for low-power signage and labels.
The Waveshare 2.9-inch NFC e-paper display, also listed as model 34751, is priced at around $28. It works with a compatible smartphone and a dedicated app. When the phone is placed close to the display, NFC transfers the image while also supplying enough power to update the panel.
Despite its small size, the display supports four colors: red, yellow, black, and white. It has a resolution of 296 × 128 pixels, which is enough for simple text, labels, icons, badges, and basic graphics. The unit measures 87.50 × 47.70 mm and is 12.70 mm thick, making it compact enough for portable and embedded applications.
Possible uses include digital name tags, conference badges, shelf labels, small information signs, inventory tags, and product labels. Because it does not need a battery, the display could be useful in situations where long-term maintenance, charging, or cable routing would be inconvenient.
However, the design also comes with limitations. Updating the display takes about 16 seconds, not including the time needed to transfer the data. More importantly, each screen must be updated individually by tapping it with a smartphone. That makes the device simple and flexible for small-scale use, but less practical for large retail environments where hundreds or thousands of labels may need to be changed frequently.
Modern electronic shelf labels in retail stores are often updated remotely through centralized wireless systems, reducing manual work. By comparison, an NFC-powered e-paper tag is better suited for smaller deployments where occasional manual updates are acceptable.
Still, the concept is appealing. A screen that needs no battery, no cable, and no constant power supply highlights why e-paper remains such a useful technology for low-energy applications.
