Warner Bros. Unveils Ambitious Live-Service DC Game to Tackle Revenue Challenges

WB Games Montreal, the creators behind Gotham Knights, have sparked interest with a new job listing for an executive producer. The role promises involvement in a “high-quality AAA game” rooted in DC Comics’ intellectual properties, focusing heavily on “post-launch operations” and a “live-service strategy.” While specific details about the IP remain under wraps, the job description highlights the necessity for a deep understanding of the entire game development lifecycle, especially concerning live services.

Last year, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League faced mixed reactions, largely due to its live-service model and a plot twist involving clone Justice League members, excluding Wonder Woman. This reception coincided with Warner Bros.’ financial results for Q1 2025, revealing a significant 48% drop in gaming revenue. Overall, the studio’s segment saw a 16% decline, with total revenues falling to $9 billion, marking a 9% decrease compared to the previous year.

Much of the gaming revenue drop is attributed to the Suicide Squad title, even as successful IPs like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 continued to perform well. The financial strain led Warner Bros. to cut staff at Rocksteady, reducing the QA team by half by September 2024. Additionally, Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego were shuttered, squashing hopes for a rumored Wonder Woman game.

Warner Bros. also experienced challenges with its Multiversus game, which initially showed promise in the competitive free-to-play arena. However, it struggled to maintain its player base and was delisted by May 2025. Although, existing users retained access to local multiplayer and training mode.

Amidst these developments, WB Games Montreal is gearing up for its new live-service venture. As the gaming division navigates this turbulent phase, both the community and financial analysts are keenly observing if the studio can produce a successful title in the crowded live-service market.
