VESA is revolutionizing the performance standards for displays with innovative updates to its ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black certifications. These advancements are poised to elevate the viewing experience for gamers and content creators by bringing high-end, next-generation displays into the spotlight.
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has unveiled these developments with plans to showcase them at CES 2025. Known for setting the benchmark for display technology, VESA is responding to fast-paced industry progress by enhancing its standards for the newest wave of advanced monitors.
The ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards now feature multiple performance tiers designed to be integrated into forthcoming high-performance displays. Renowned companies like GIGABYTE, MSI, LG, and Samsung are ahead of the curve, already incorporating these standards into their upcoming high-end displays aimed at gamers and creators. According to Roland Wooster, Chairman of the VESA task group, the introduction of a 1000 nits peak brightness for OLED HDR content marks a notable breakthrough. This achievement is pivotal for creative applications, ensuring that certified products meet rigorous testing criteria and set a premium benchmark for OLED HDR displays.
The new DisplayHDR True Black standard introduces a 1000-luminance level, pushing OLED technology to new visual heights by overcoming previous challenges like achieving high brightness. With HDR capabilities, OLED panels now promise unprecedented clarity and vibrancy.
In addition to the new DisplayHDR True Black tier, VESA has introduced three performance tiers for ClearMR: ClearMR 15000, 18000, and 21000. These tiers are crucial for reducing motion blur, enhancing clarity in fast-moving content. The updated CMR metric gives a definitive numerical value to help users easily gauge motion blur intensity in VESA-certified ClearMR displays.
Several leading manufacturers are pioneering these state-of-the-art standards in their premium monitors. For instance, GIGABYTE plans to reveal its top-tier gaming models featuring the latest ClearMR standard in 2025. Additionally, MSI, LG, and Samsung have announced that their forthcoming monitors will be equipped with VESA’s latest ClearMR certifications. Notably, the LG 27GX79A stands out as the first OLED gaming monitor to receive the VESA ClearMR 21000 certification.
These advancements by VESA signal an exciting era for display enthusiasts, promising devices that deliver exceptional performance that meets the intricate and demanding needs of gaming and content creation.
