Verizon customer says “free” iPhone 16 Pro promo turned into a $2,000 bill after store mistake
A Verizon customer says a promising iPhone 16 Pro upgrade deal turned into an expensive headache after a store error caused the promotional credits to disappear from the account.
The customer, posting on Reddit under the username “broll33,” explained that they visited a Verizon store to take advantage of a promotion offering a free iPhone 16 Pro through monthly bill credits. The deal also reportedly included paying off the remaining balance on their older devices, making it a strong upgrade offer for anyone willing to renew service under a three-year agreement.
But instead of receiving the iPhone 16 Pro models included in the promotion, the customer says a Verizon employee mistakenly handed over iPhone 16 Pro Max units. The employee later admitted the mistake, according to the post. Unfortunately, the issue was not discovered until after the customer had already gone home, and the store had closed for the day.
The next day, the customer returned to the store and exchanged the phones for the correct iPhone 16 Pro models. The restocking fee was waived, which the customer says was appropriate given that the mistake came from the store. However, the bigger problem happened during the exchange process: the original promotional offer did not carry over.
Because the promotion was not properly transferred, the expected bill credits were not applied. As a result, phones that were supposed to be essentially free through a renewed three-year contract are now being billed at around $1,000 each. In total, the customer says the mistake could cost them about $2,000.
The frustrating part is that the customer did not catch the problem right away. Since the account was set up on autopay, the higher monthly charges went unnoticed for a long period of time. By the time the issue became clear, the situation had already turned into a much larger billing dispute.
The Reddit user says they still have the original Verizon email advertising the iPhone 16 Pro promotion, along with the documentation showing how the mistake happened and where the promotion failed to transfer. That paper trail could be important if Verizon reviews the case and decides whether to apply the missing credits retroactively.
The customer also admitted they should have checked the bills sooner, but argued that the issue began with an employee error and an improper exchange process. What was supposed to be a straightforward phone upgrade became a costly problem that could seriously affect a household budget.
In the Reddit comments, some users suggested that the customer ask Verizon to submit a “promo correction” form, which may help restore missing bill credits when an eligible promotion was not applied correctly. Others said they have seen similar cases where customers were reimbursed for months or even years of missing credits after the issue was escalated through the right channels.
The situation serves as a reminder for anyone taking advantage of carrier phone deals: always verify that the exact device, promotion, trade-in value, payoff offer, and monthly bill credits are correctly listed on the account after any purchase or exchange. Even when a store employee admits a mistake, the billing system may not automatically fix the promotional discount.
For Verizon customers upgrading to an iPhone 16 Pro, or any device under a promotional deal, it is worth checking the first bill immediately and saving every email, receipt, contract, and trade-in document. A “free phone” offer can be a great deal, but only if the credits are properly applied from the start.
