Vatican Introduces Its First Anime Girl Mascot

The Vatican has taken an unexpected, yet delightful turn by introducing an adorable anime girl mascot named Luce. This charming character has been created in hopes of connecting with the younger generation by encapsulating sentiments that resonate with their hearts. Luce, whose name means “Light” in Italian, is designed to guide young pilgrims towards hope and faith, as highlighted by the Catholic News Agency.

This fresh initiative comes to life through the artistry of Simone Legno, co-founder of tokidoki. Luce is not alone in her journey; she is accompanied by her faithful dog, Santino, and her friends Fe, Xin, and Sky. These characters, decked out in vibrant raincoats and boots, set off on a holy pilgrimage. Their appearance, reminiscent of the beloved Sanrio characters, includes unique eye markings described by Jubilee chief organizer Archbishop Rino Fisichella as “a symbol of the hope of the heart.”

Luce is set to make her grand debut at the Lucca Comics and Games convention in Italy, marking the Vatican’s inaugural participation in a comics convention. Moreover, she will also serve as a representative of the Holy See at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. This move comes as part of the Catholic Church’s broader plan to host a variety of cultural events and projects leading up to the forthcoming Catholic jubilee.

As of now, details about possible merchandising or multimedia expansions involving Luce and her companions remain under wraps, but the anticipation is palpable as many await what’s next for this charming new face of faith.
