Vampire Princess Miyu remaster

Vampire Princess Miyu Remaster Runs Into Production Trouble, Ships Without Cover Art

Vampire Princess Miyu HD Remaster Is Finished, but Its Blu-ray Release Is Taking an Unusual Path

AnimEigo has completed its HD remaster of the classic 1988 Vampire Princess Miyu OVA, but the long-awaited Blu-ray release has run into an unexpected problem: packaging approval.

According to the company, the issue stems from Japan’s copyright and approval process, which has created a procedural standstill. AnimEigo said it has made “absolutely no progress in over a year,” leaving the finished remaster stuck without approved cover art or standard packaging materials.

The timing has made the situation even more urgent. AnimEigo discovered that its license for the Vampire Princess Miyu OVA expires next year, giving the company a limited window to release the title properly. If the deadline passes, it may become extremely difficult for anyone else to bring this version of the anime to home video in the future.

Rather than let the completed restoration sit unreleased, AnimEigo is moving forward with a stripped-down Blu-ray edition. The disc will not include elaborate artwork, premium packaging, or a fully designed case presentation. Instead, it will ship in a simple format with text on white paper.

The limited Blu-ray release is scheduled to ship on September 8, 2026, with preorders now open through MediaOCD’s online store.

While the packaging may be minimal, the remaster itself is the real attraction. The HD restoration is already complete, and early footage shows a clean, polished presentation that gives the atmospheric OVA a much-needed visual upgrade. For fans of classic anime, gothic horror, and physical media preservation, this release could become an important collector’s item.

Vampire Princess Miyu is set in Kyoto and follows Miyu Yamano, a mysterious girl born from the union of a human and a Shinma. After awakening as a vampire, Miyu becomes the Guardian, a being tasked with hunting stray Shinma and sending them back into the darkness.

At her side is Larva, her Western Shinma companion. Together, they move through a haunting world of lost souls, supernatural threats, and hidden truths. Before Miyu turns 15, she longs to return to the darkness herself, but she must first complete her mission and uncover the truth about her own identity.

The OVA is directed by Toshihiro Hirano, known for works such as Magic Knight Rayearth and Dangaioh. The screenplay comes from Noboru Aikawa, whose credits include Fullmetal Alchemist, while the music is composed by Kenji Kawai, celebrated for his work on Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell.

First released in 1988, Vampire Princess Miyu has long been regarded as a cult classic among anime fans. Its moody atmosphere, tragic storytelling, elegant horror themes, and memorable soundtrack helped it stand apart from many other supernatural anime of its era.

AnimEigo has played a major role in bringing Japanese animation to U.S. audiences since the late 1980s. As one of the early fan-driven anime publishers in America, the company helped introduce viewers to titles that might otherwise have remained difficult to find outside Japan. Its catalog has included classic and cult-favorite releases such as Bubblegum Crisis, Megazone 23, Alien Nine, and more.

The unusual Vampire Princess Miyu Blu-ray release highlights a growing concern among anime fans: the importance of preservation. In an era dominated by streaming, older titles can easily disappear due to licensing complications, expired contracts, or lack of commercial interest. Physical media remains one of the most reliable ways to keep classic anime available for future viewers.

For longtime fans, this limited Blu-ray may be the best chance to own the restored Vampire Princess Miyu OVA. For newcomers, it offers an opportunity to experience one of anime’s most haunting supernatural stories in high definition before licensing issues potentially place it back out of reach.
