Valve revives the Steam Machine as a living-room gaming PC built on custom AMD hardware, promising a streamlined way to enjoy your Steam library on the big screen.
At the heart of the new Steam Machine is a bespoke AMD system-on-chip featuring six Zen 4 CPU cores and a GPU with 28 compute units. The graphics solution is described as a cut-down variant of the Radeon RX 7600, and the platform targets a 110 W TDP. Paired with 16 GB of DDR5 system memory and 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, it’s designed to deliver modern 1080p and 1440p gaming and, with the right upscaling, push into 4K territory.
Valve offers two storage configurations out of the box: 512 GB and 2 TB. There’s also microSD expansion for quick and easy capacity boosts. While user-upgradable internal storage hasn’t been officially confirmed, the company’s track record suggests it could be possible.
Connectivity and I/O are well-rounded for living-room flexibility:
– DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 for TV or monitor setups
– Two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and one USB 3.2 Gen2 port
– 1 Gb Ethernet for wired networking
– Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for fast wireless and accessory support
The system runs SteamOS 3 out of the box, offering a console-like interface that’s optimized for controllers and couch play. For a bit of flair, there are 17 addressable LEDs that can be customized to match your setup. The compact chassis measures 152 x 162.4 x 156 mm and weighs 2.6 kg, making it easy to slot into an entertainment center.
Valve says the Steam Machine can handle 4K gaming, though achieving smooth performance will likely lean on technologies like AMD FSR, given the GPU’s class. Even so, this configuration should excel at high-quality 1080p and 1440p gaming across a vast portion of the Steam catalog.
Pricing and release details have not been announced yet. With the holiday season nearing, the launch window remains unclear, but interest will no doubt be high among players looking for a plug-and-play PC gaming box for the living room.
In short, the new Steam Machine brings PC flexibility to the couch with a modern AMD core, expandable storage, generous I/O, and SteamOS convenience—an appealing alternative for anyone who wants PC performance without the hassle of a traditional desktop setup.
