Valve Fixes Steam Machine’s False Overheat Scare by Raising Red LED Warning to 100°C

Valve is preparing a BIOS update for the Steam Machine that should make its red LED temperature warning less aggressive and reduce unnecessary overheating alerts during gaming or stress testing.

The issue centers on the Steam Machine’s light bar, which can turn red when the system believes the CPU or GPU is getting too hot. Some users have reported seeing the warning appear even when temperatures were still within normal operating ranges. In one case, the red light reportedly appeared while the GPU was around 75°C and the CPU was around 81°C, temperatures that are generally considered safe for modern hardware under load.

According to Steam Support, the current BIOS triggers the red LED warning earlier than intended. The Steam Machine itself is not overheating in these cases, and the CPU and GPU are operating within expected limits. The problem is tied to the warning threshold, not a hardware failure.

Valve says the upcoming BIOS update will adjust the red LED behavior so the warning appears at 100°C for both the CPU and GPU. The current configuration reportedly triggers the warning at 95°C for the CPU and 90°C for the GPU, which can cause the system to display an overheating alert before it is actually necessary.

This change should help prevent confusion for Steam Machine owners, especially those playing demanding PC games or running heavy workloads that naturally push temperatures higher. Modern processors and graphics chips are designed to handle high temperatures, and Valve has indicated that the Steam Machine will begin throttling performance at 100°C to protect the hardware. If temperatures continue to rise beyond safe limits, the system is designed to shut down automatically.

The update does not mean Valve is removing thermal protection. Instead, it is correcting when the red light appears so that users are not warned too early. The red LED will still act as a safety indicator, but it should better match the system’s actual thermal behavior after the BIOS patch is installed.

It is also important to note that this red LED warning is separate from other system behaviors, such as GPU-related failures or memory training that may occur after a BIOS update. In this case, the issue is specifically about the temperature warning light activating sooner than it should.

For Steam Machine users, the upcoming BIOS update should make the device feel more reliable during intense gaming sessions. By raising the CPU and GPU warning threshold to 100°C, Valve aims to reduce false overheating alerts while keeping the built-in safety protections in place.
