California residents are on the brink of a significant digital leap as the state prepares to launch the integration of driver’s licenses and state IDs into popular mobile wallets such as Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. This move is set to provide Californians with a convenient way to present their identification through their smartphones at various security checkpoints and establishments.
Residents will have the advantage of being able to prove their age and identity using their mobile devices, both in person at select locations and through certain applications. This will align with similar initiatives already in place in states including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio.
For those looking to add their ID into Apple Wallet, the process begins by tapping the “+” button within the app and selecting the option for a ‘Driver’s License or State ID.’ Users are then guided through a series of steps, which include taking a selfie and scanning the front and back of their physical ID for verification.
For Google Wallet users, adding an ID is achieved by selecting ‘Add to Wallet’ followed by ‘ID card.’ The user will then have to specify their state of residence and continue through various verification procedures using their physical ID card.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his enthusiasm about this partnership with Apple and Google, citing it as a stride towards enhancing the state’s service delivery. The governor emphasized that through this collaboration, readily accessible technology will cater to the everyday needs of Californians.
It is interesting to note that the integration of mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) is not entirely new to the state; more than half a million Californians have already added an mDL to their phones via the California DMV Wallet app during a pilot program limited to 1.5 million participants.
The transition to mobile digital licenses is a burgeoning trend across the United States. Through the efforts of the Secure Technology Alliance, over twenty states are considering the adoption of digital IDs on mobile platforms. Such states include, but are not limited to, Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wyoming.
As California sets the stage for its residents to move towards a digital identification system, it paves the way for improved security, privacy, and efficiency in identification processes.
