Unraveling Instagram’s Threads App: All You Need to Know

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, alternatives to Twitter have been gaining traction, especially since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform in 2022. Among these newcomers is Meta’s Threads, which has drawn curiosity and interest alongside other platforms like Mastodon, Bluesky, Spill, and T2.

Threads aims to be Meta’s answer to Twitter, offering users a text-centric social experience that integrates seamlessly with their Instagram account. Signing up is easy; simply use your Instagram credentials to get started. Unlike Twitter, Threads currently offers a more straightforward experience with no paid subscriptions or ads disrupting the flow. Your Instagram verification badge rolls over, maintaining consistency across the platforms. Moreover, users can effortlessly connect with their Instagram network to find friends and potential follows.

Since its release over a year ago, Threads presents a simplified social experience, lacking some features commonly associated with Twitter, such as direct messages, long video uploads, and live audio discussions. However, this simplicity may appeal to those seeking a streamlined social platform.

Threads is accessible on iOS and Android across more than 100 countries, although it only became available in the EU at the end of 2023 due to privacy considerations. Upon launching the app, European users could explore the platform without creating an account, albeit with limited interactive capabilities.

As of November 2024, Threads boasts an impressive user base of over 275 million monthly active participants. This growth is a testament to its rapid rise, having secured 10 million signups just hours after its debut, and soaring to 100 million users within five days.

Posts on Threads can accommodate up to 500 characters, supporting images, videos, and GIFs, with a maximum of 10 media items per post. Recently, Threads had to impose rate limits on viewing posts in response to increased spam activity.

For those who prefer browsing on the web, Threads.net is available for viewing and posting content. Should you ever decide to part ways with Threads, deleting your account is straightforward, although it formerly required deleting the linked Instagram account before the end of 2023. Now, you enjoy a 30-day window to reconsider any account deletions.

Customization is key in Threads, with features allowing users to pin search terms and tags, and experiment with creating custom feeds by curating specific profiles and terms. Threads drew inspiration from another platform, Bluesky, to introduce “Starter Packs,” essentially thematic lists of suggested follow-suggestions.

Currently, direct messaging is not supported, aligning with Instagram Head Adam Mosseri’s vision to prevent another inbox from forming. Instead, users are encouraged to communicate within existing apps.

The API for Threads, launched in June 2024, opens up opportunities for developers to create tools to engage with the platform, though it doesn’t currently support post deletion or allow third-party clients to fetch timeline data.

As Threads continues to evolve, it is partially integrated into the fediverse, enabling sharing across networks like Mastodon. This integration expanded in 2024, allowing for interactions like following users from compatible servers and seeing fediverse responses to Threads posts.

While promising, Threads still lacks certain expected features, such as full fediverse integration, scheduling posts (a feature reportedly coming soon), direct messaging capabilities, list support, and compatibility with third-party clients.

As with any social media platform tied to Instagram, privacy remains a key concern. Meta assures users that data collection practices align with those of its other applications like Instagram, as noted by Deputy Chief Privacy Officer Rob Sherman.

Evolving and adapting since its inception, Threads holds promise as a compelling choice for users exploring alternatives in the vast digital landscape of social networking.
