The Pixel 9 series, unveiled at the 2024 Made by Google event, has garnered a lot of attention, particularly for its innovative AI capabilities. As users explore the new models and test out the latest features, some have encountered issues with AI tools when the device’s bootloader is unlocked.
Typically, unlocking a device’s bootloader opens the door to a variety of extended functionalities, such as installing custom ROMs and removing pre-installed bloatware. However, with Google Pixel devices, this process appears to disable certain built-in AI features. Users from various forums have reported that essential features like Pixel Screenshots, Call Notes, Pixel Studio, and AI weather updates in the Pixel Weather app are unresponsive with an unlocked bootloader.
Specifically, unlocking the bootloader on the Pixel 8 and 9 models seems to interrupt the function of these AI tools. This issue extends to the Google Gemini Advanced promo, which offers advanced capabilities that also fail to operate due to compromised device integrity when the bootloader is unlocked.
Though some users have found temporary fixes, such as using Magsik modules or altering the device fingerprint to replicate a Pixel 9 series model, the most effective solution so far has been to unroot the device and relock the bootloader.
The underlying reason for Google’s restrictions on certain AI features in rooted and unlocked devices is still unclear. It may relate to security measures and integrity verification processes designed to ensure the device remains unmodified before certain functionalities are enabled.
Google has yet to officially address this limitation, but it seems likely that these built-in checks are responsible for the deactivation of specific AI features in the Pixel 9 lineup. Until Google offers a resolution or a formal statement, users may need to keep their bootloaders locked to fully enjoy the AI features.
