Unicode 16.0 Alpha Introduces Almost 4,000 Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Retro Gaming Characters

Egyptian hieroglyphs are making a significant leap into the digital age with the upcoming release of Unicode 16.0. This new version of the Unicode Standard is expected to include an impressive addition of 3,995 Egyptian hieroglyphs. This expansion is a noteworthy development as it covers the majority of the 5,187 new characters planned for the latest Unicode update.

The introduction of these hieroglyphs, known as Extended-A, enhances the existing set which has been part of the Unicode Standard since version 5.2 in 2009. The previous list of hieroglyphs included just over a thousand characters. Although 700 characters from the original Gardiner’s list are deemed sufficient to encode approximately 90% of Egyptian texts, an additional 4,000 characters are required to represent the remaining texts.

Some of these hieroglyphs are extraordinarily rare, only appearing once or twice in the entirety of ancient Egyptian literature. This fact was highlighted in a detailed 2023 Encoding Proposal which demonstrated the meticulous effort needed to integrate these ancient symbols into our modern digital framework. This body of work aligns with the interests of Egyptologists and other researchers who have contributed to selecting the necessary characters.

Beyond scholarly applications, Unicode 16.0 also brings exciting updates for retro gaming enthusiasts, with the inclusion of various sprites reminiscent of classic games from consoles like the Atari 2600. These new symbols are part of the “Symbols for Legacy Computing Supplement” and feature imagery such as flying saucers, aliens, snakeheads, and go/racing carts.

Moreover, the alpha version introduces new emojis, adding a touch of personality and fun to digital communications. Among the eight new emojis, users can look forward to expressive additions like an exhausted smiley, a fingerprint, and a shovel.

Feedback for the alpha release will be open until April 4, 2024, ahead of the next development phase. All the current characters in the Unicode Standard are accessible on the Unicode charts page, and the newly introduced characters in the Unicode 16.0 Versioned Charts Index can be reviewed. Once incorporated, the Unicode Standard will boast over 155,000 characters. The finalized version of Unicode 16.0 is anticipated to be announced in September 2024.

These advancements underscore the Unicode Consortium’s commitment to embracing the rich tapestry of human history and pop culture, ensuring their preservation in the digital realm.
