The latest model of the Steam Deck has been updated with a 7.4-inch OLED display, boasting an impressive peak brightness of 1000 nits. However, a recent burn-in test has highlighted the potential drawbacks of such high-brightness OLED screens.
In a detailed stress test video, a handheld gaming specialist displays the Steam Deck OLED’s screen after enduring a rigorous 750-hour burn-in test. The test included checking burn-in susceptibility at both SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) brightness levels of up to 400 nits and at the maximum HDR (High Dynamic Range) brightness of 1000 nits, along with analyses of the individual red, green, and blue subpixels.
While this test represented an extreme scenario, with the display showing unchanging content for approximately 31 days straight, it does draw attention to an important issue. In gaming, certain static elements, such as HUDs (Heads-Up Displays), are constantly present, raising the possibility of burn-in or persistent afterimages on an OLED gaming device.
The test findings indicated the following: while “true” burn-in was not observed, the prolonged exposure to high brightness did cause the pixels to diminish in luminance. This, in turn, led to noticeable afterimages during HDR content at maximum brightness that could not be resolved. In contrast, the SDR content did not lead to afterimages that interfered with normal gameplay.
A critical factor influencing this outcome is the disparity in power consumption and subsequent strain on the pixels between SDR and HDR brightness levels; SDR operates at lower brightness and generates less waste heat with 2 watts of power consumption compared to HDR’s 5 watts. Therefore, to help elongate the lifespan of the Steam Deck OLED’s display and avoid needing to replace it, reducing the screen brightness is recommended.
