Ubisoft’s Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition Launches on Steam, But Buyers Report Missing Game Files
Ubisoft has finally released the original Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition on Steam, marking the first time the classic version of the beloved strategy game has appeared on the platform. However, the launch has not gone as fans expected.
Early buyers are reporting that the Steam version does not currently include the actual game files. Instead, users say the download contains only a tiny 23 KB file named Heroes3.exe. When opened, the file reportedly launches a command prompt and displays a message indicating it is a “dummy executable,” leaving players unable to access the game.
For a release advertised as the full Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition, the issue has quickly frustrated longtime fans of the franchise. The problem appears to be affecting multiple users, with several Steam reviews pointing to the same missing-files situation. Many of the reported playtimes are extremely short, which suggests players are discovering the issue almost immediately after installation.
The new Steam listing is priced at $9.99 and is meant to include the original 1999 version of Heroes of Might and Magic III along with its two major expansions, Armageddon’s Blade and The Shadow of Death. That makes it especially appealing to fans who prefer the original experience over the previously released HD Edition from 2015.
At the moment, the Steam store page still presents the release as the complete classic package. Given the nature of the problem, it is likely a publishing or upload mistake rather than an intentional limitation. Players interested in buying the game may want to check recent user reviews first or wait until the issue is officially resolved.
Heroes of Might and Magic III remains one of the most iconic turn-based strategy games ever released. Its mix of fantasy armies, tactical battles, kingdom management, hero progression, and memorable campaigns has kept it popular for more than two decades. This release should not be confused with the upcoming Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake. That separate project is being developed with Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine and is planned to feature 3D environments, free camera movement, modern matchmaking, simultaneous turns, both original expansions, and other updated features. The remake is currently expected to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
