Transition Ahead: Google Podcasts Making Way for YouTube Music

Google has announced the imminent closure of its standalone Podcasts app within the United States, prompting users to transfer their podcast subscriptions to YouTube Music by April 2 to continue enjoying their audio content uninterrupted. Once the stated date is reached, the ability to stream directly from the Google Podcasts app will cease.

Since its inception, Google Podcasts has been a favorite for many with its accessible interface, easy discovery, subscription capabilities, and options for adding podcasts via RSS feeds. The app has enjoyed significant popularity, with over 500 million installations on Android devices across the globe. Nevertheless, the tech giant unveiled plans to phase out Google Podcasts as of early 2024, favouring a consolidated approach to audio services through YouTube.

The strategy to transition users mirrors the method used in 2020 when Google shifted its Google Play Music audience over to YouTube Music before the former’s shutdown. For a period following this switch, Google Podcasts was still supported, as YouTube Music had yet to equip itself with podcast functionalities. By the closing days of 2023, the tides had turned, with YouTube Music now embracing podcasts worldwide, even enabling the upload of RSS feeds by February of the following year.

The strategic pivot towards YouTube may offer Google leverage in the competitive podcasting arena, particularly with the budding interest in video-centric podcasts. This format aligns with YouTube’s existing strengths and popularity. Reinforcing this trend, Spotify has recently entered into an agreement with Universal Music Group to introduce video podcasts for U.S. users, as well as unveiling pilot video podcast projects in other global markets.

The initial discovery of Google Podcasts’ U.S. shutdown was reported by Bleeping Computer, with Google’s support page subsequently verifying the end-of-service for the app at the close of March 2024. To assist users who may have missed the transition alerts, Google has provided an extension until July 2024, during which time users can employ the app’s export feature to save their subscriptions.

While Google did not offer immediate comments on the shutdown, later communications confirmed the April 2 transition deadline for U.S. users. As for non-U.S. users, Google is yet to publicize a specific timeline.

Despite Google’s global strategy indicating a final goodbye to Google Podcasts in 2024, avid podcast listeners now must prepare to make the transition, ensuring their audio engagement continues seamlessly on YouTube Music. This change marks a significant shift in how Google users will access and engage with podcast content in the future.
