Tokyo Game Show 2026 final day canceled as Typhoon Dujuan approaches Japan
Tokyo Game Show 2026 will end earlier than planned after organizers canceled the event’s fifth and final day due to the approaching Typhoon Dujuan, also known in Japan as Typhoon No. 25.
The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association, the organizer of Tokyo Game Show, announced that the Monday, September 21 schedule at Makuhari Messe in Chiba has been called off for safety reasons. The decision was made after weather forecasts warned of stronger winds and heavier rain from the afternoon onward, raising concerns about public transport delays and the ability of visitors, exhibitors, and staff to return home safely.
Organizers said the safety of everyone attending the show was their top priority. They also apologized to fans and industry guests who had planned to take part in the final day of the event.
Sunday, September 20 will now serve as the last in-person day of Tokyo Game Show 2026. As of the announcement, Sunday’s opening hours remain unchanged, although organizers warned that some activities, facilities, or stage content may still be adjusted or canceled depending on weather conditions.
A historic cancellation for Tokyo Game Show
The cancellation is especially notable because Tokyo Game Show 2026 marks the event’s 30th anniversary. To celebrate the milestone, the show had been expanded into a five-day format for the first time, moving beyond its traditional four-day schedule.
With the September 21 cancellation, the anniversary edition will effectively return to a four-day event. Organizers also confirmed that this is the first time in Tokyo Game Show’s 30-year history that a day has been canceled after the event had already begun.
Attendees planning to visit on Sunday have been advised to check the latest weather reports and transportation updates before traveling. Extra travel time is strongly recommended, as rail and road services could be affected by the typhoon’s movement.
Ticket refunds for September 21
Full refunds will be offered for tickets purchased for Monday, September 21. Ticket holders should follow the refund instructions provided by the ticketing service or platform where they made their purchase. Additional refund details are expected to be shared through official event channels.
Tickets for Sunday, September 20 are not eligible for refunds because the event is still scheduled to proceed on that date.
Some canceled stage events may move online
Although the physical event on September 21 has been canceled, organizers are exploring ways to preserve part of the planned programming. Some stage events originally scheduled for Monday may be streamed online as official broadcasts, depending on venue safety and coordination with exhibitors.
Sony has also confirmed that its PlayStation booth activities planned for September 21, including hands-on demo sessions and streaming events, will not take place.
Further updates are expected as the typhoon’s path becomes clearer. For now, Tokyo Game Show 2026 will close its show floor on Sunday, bringing an unexpected early end to what was intended to be the biggest anniversary edition in the event’s history.
