TikTok Turns Browsing Into Buying With New AI Shopping Helper and One-Tap Checkout

TikTok is making a bigger move into social commerce with the launch of a new AI shopping assistant and an in-app checkout experience that lets users buy products directly from brands without leaving the app.

The new TikTok Shopping Assistant is designed to act like a conversational shopping guide. Instead of scrolling through videos and then searching elsewhere for product details, users can ask questions inside TikTok and get AI-powered help in real time. The assistant can provide information about products, sizing, shipping, availability, and purchase options while remembering user preferences during the conversation.

This could make shopping on TikTok feel more personal and convenient. A user who discovers a jacket, beauty product, gadget, or home item in the For You feed can ask follow-up questions, compare details, and move toward checkout without switching apps.

TikTok is also introducing a direct checkout feature that allows users to purchase from brands with a single click from the For You feed. This is a significant shift because TikTok’s main video feed has long been a place where products go viral, but users often had to leave the app or visit another shopping page to complete a purchase.

By combining AI shopping guidance with fast in-app payments, TikTok is trying to turn product discovery into instant buying. The platform’s strength has always been its ability to spark impulse purchases through short-form video, creator recommendations, trends, and viral reviews. Now, TikTok wants to close the gap between seeing a product and buying it.

The company says the new shopping tools are being developed with commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. These partnerships could help more brands offer smoother shopping experiences directly through TikTok.

Until now, TikTok Shop has been the center of the company’s e-commerce strategy. Launched in the United States in September 2023, TikTok Shop gave creators, sellers, and brands a dedicated marketplace inside the app. However, these new features show that TikTok is expanding its shopping ambitions beyond a standalone marketplace.

Instead of relying only on TikTok Shop, the company is bringing shopping deeper into the everyday TikTok experience. The For You feed, where users spend much of their time discovering videos, trends, and products, is becoming a more direct path to purchase.

This move also helps TikTok keep users inside its own platform when they need product advice. Rather than turning to search engines, brand websites, or external AI tools for answers, users may be able to get the information they need through TikTok’s own AI shopping assistant.

TikTok’s growing role in online shopping is already clear. According to the company’s recent Economic Impact Report, activity on the platform helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses. The report also said 54 million Americans purchased a product after watching a TikTok video.

Market research estimates suggest TikTok Shop could generate around $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, accounting for about 18% of the country’s social commerce market. With the addition of AI-powered shopping support and direct checkout, TikTok appears ready to compete even more aggressively in the fast-growing social shopping space.

For brands, the new tools could create more opportunities to convert attention into sales. For shoppers, the experience may become faster, easier, and more interactive. And for TikTok, the update strengthens its position as not just an entertainment app, but a major shopping destination where product discovery and checkout happen in the same place.
