TikTok Introduces Parental Controls to Monitor Teens’ Social Interactions and Manage Screen Time

Exciting changes are coming to TikTok aimed at enhancing teen safety and giving parents more control! Announced recently, the social media giant is introducing some thoughtful features designed to protect its younger users while also promoting healthy digital habits.

Parents will now have the power to set specific hours during which their teens cannot access TikTok. This new “Time Away” feature allows parents to choose when their kids can take a break from screen time, whether it’s during school hours, family time, late at night, or when they’re on a weekend getaway. By setting a recurring schedule, parents can ensure their teens maintain a balanced routine. If a teen requests extra time on the app, it’s up to the parents to approve or decline the additional access.

In a bid to increase transparency and safety, TikTok is also allowing parents to view their teen’s following and followers list. They can even see who their child has blocked. This helps foster candid discussions about digital safety and literacy between parents and teens.

For further fostering of responsible app usage, TikTok is reintroducing customizable daily screen time limits. Parents can set specific usage times for weekdays and weekends, making it easier to monitor and control screen time.

Recognizing the importance of a good night’s sleep, TikTok’s new “wind down” feature will remind teens under the age of 16 to get some rest after 10 PM. The user’s For You feed will display calming visuals and music, encouraging relaxation and mindfulness. If a teen dismisses this gentle nudge, another prompt will soon follow. In upcoming updates, TikTok plans to integrate meditation exercises into this feature, offering a holistic approach to winding down.

The app is also bringing back the STEM feed for teens who had previously turned it off, promoting educational content engagement. Moreover, parents can switch their teen’s account back to a default private setting if it’s been made public, ensuring added security.

These proactive measures by TikTok respond to growing concerns about the platform’s influence on younger users. The initiative aims to appease lawmakers’ scrutiny over social media’s impact on young audiences as the company remains under the spotlight regarding its future in the United States. With these updates, TikTok is making strides to ensure a safe, balanced, and enjoyable experience for its teen users.
