Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced an exciting update for Threads, the company’s social network. Users will soon be able to enjoy a separate direct message (DM) inbox within the platform, eliminating the need to switch to Instagram for private chats.
Initially, this feature will be tested in select regions, including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans for a broader rollout. For now, the feature supports one-on-one conversations, with group messages on the horizon.
This move is a positive step for Threads, as users often have different follower dynamics compared to Instagram. Some Threads users may not frequently use Instagram, making this a much-requested enhancement.
In the past, Instagram explored integrating Threads DMs directly into its inbox. However, the idea of shared networks didn’t fully align with user behavior, as Threads encourages a different kind of interaction and community-building, reminiscent of other short-form platforms.
When Threads launched in July 2023, it greatly relied on Instagram’s connectivity, seamlessly linking users with friends and creators. Over time, though, it became clear that Threads was fostering unique networks thanks to its open, dynamic structure.
The demand for a distinct DM inbox grew louder, with users seeking seamless one-on-one communication without app-hopping.
Although this update is welcome, Meta faces some competition. Bluesky, a rival social network, introduced DMs back in May 2024. Moreover, just days ago, Elon Musk’s X unveiled XChat, offering group messages, vanishing mode, and file sharing to enhance its DM experience.
Despite being late to the game, Meta’s new DM feature for Threads is sure to enhance user experience and foster better connections on the platform.
