Threads is stepping up its game in response to numerous user requests for a more personalized experience. After a slew of complaints regarding its content algorithm, the social network is now tweaking its settings to prioritize showing posts from people you actually follow.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced in a recent Threads post that these adjustments aim to bring more targeted content to users, effectively decreasing the number of suggested posts from unfamiliar accounts. By rebalancing the ranking system, users will notice an increase in updates from those they already follow.
However, this shift may impact content creators differently. Mosseri noted that while the connection with followers is likely to be strengthened—showing increased engagement with familiar audiences—the reach to new, unconnected users may decline. He emphasized that this adjustment is an ongoing effort to fine-tune the balance between reaching followers and garnering overall engagement.
In addition to these algorithm changes, Threads has recently launched a feature allowing users to create custom feeds, giving individuals more control over the type of content they wish to see. While Threads already includes a Following feed, it defaults to the algorithm-driven For You feed, curated by Meta.
These updates come at a crucial moment, as Threads faces growing competition from platforms like Bluesky, which has recently celebrated reaching 20 million users. By responding to user feedback and enhancing its user experience, Threads aims to retain its audience in a rapidly evolving social media landscape.
