The cult classic horror film, The Blair Witch Project, is making a significant comeback with its latest home media release, which promises to showcase the film as the creators originally envisioned. The iconic movie, known for its eerie realism and innovative filmmaking, will now be available in a version that preserves its initial creative intent.
Fans of the film may not be aware that home media releases often involve several layers of duplication, resulting in quality loss. This was the fate of The Blair Witch Project when it was originally prepared for home viewing. Co-producer Mike Monello has revealed that the film was shot on Hi8 and 16mm formats but then transferred to 35mm film for theater screenings through a process known as telecine. Unfortunately, when it came to distributing the film for home release, a copy was made from this 35mm version instead of the original master, leading to increased film grain and altered editing due to the degradation of copying a copy.
Now, 25 years later, the film will be re-released in a version that aligns with its creators’ vision. This new edition includes over 90 minutes of never-before-seen footage and an insightful documentary, offering fans a deeper dive into the making of this groundbreaking movie. Monello has encouraged fans to rally for a wider release in the US, particularly on streaming platforms, by reaching out to Lionsgate.
This release can be found under the Region B version of The Blair Witch Project on the Second Sight website, presenting an exciting opportunity for both old fans and newcomers to experience the film in its intended form.
