Why Some CDs Are Cracking Apart: A New Warning for Disc Collectors
CDs and DVDs have long been known to suffer from aging problems such as bit rot, laser rot, oxidation, and data loss. But collectors are now facing a more surprising concern: some optical discs may physically crack, split, or even shatter after exposure to certain cleaning products or storage materials.
Recent reports from optical media collectors have drawn attention to CDs that broke apart despite having no obvious scratches, bends, or impact damage. In several cases, the discs appeared normal until they were handled, cleaned, or removed from storage. The suspected cause is damage to the polycarbonate substrate, the clear plastic layer that forms the main body of a CD.
One collector reported that a disc cracked while being gently cleaned and polished. The damage was believed to be linked to chemical stress cracking, possibly caused by a diluted cleaning solution. Instead of simple aging, the cleaning chemicals may have weakened the plastic over time or reacted with the surface in a way that made the disc brittle.
Another case involved a CD stored inside a foam-padded protective case. When the owner checked it, the disc was found broken into several pieces. Some collectors believe certain types of polyurethane foam can release chemical fumes as they age. In a sealed case, those fumes may build up and expose the disc to compounds that can weaken or craze polycarbonate plastic.
The exact reason behind these failures is still not fully confirmed. Most current explanations are based on collector observations rather than laboratory testing. However, the chemistry behind the concern is realistic. Polycarbonate can be damaged by harsh solvents such as acetone and benzene, and long-term exposure to milder chemicals may also cause stress cracks under the right conditions.
CDs may be more vulnerable to this kind of damage than DVDs because of how they are made. A standard CD uses a single polycarbonate layer, while a DVD is built from two thinner polycarbonate layers bonded together. That structure may make DVDs less prone to the exact type of cracking seen in some CDs, although DVDs have their own aging risks, including adhesive layer separation.
This issue adds to the growing list of problems affecting physical media preservation. CDs and DVDs can degrade due to oxidation, contamination, UV exposure, manufacturing defects, and breakdown of the reflective layer. Even when a disc looks clean and undamaged, the data stored on it may not remain readable forever.
For collectors of classic games, software, music albums, movies, and archived files, the warning is clear: optical discs should not be treated as permanent storage. They can last for decades under good conditions, but they are not immune to chemical damage or age-related failure.
To reduce the risk, avoid using aggressive household cleaners, solvents, or unknown polishing liquids on CDs and DVDs. Store discs in clean, dry cases away from foam padding, direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat. If a disc contains rare or important data, make a backup as soon as possible.
Physical media remains valuable, especially for collectors and preservationists, but no single CD or DVD should be trusted as the only copy of something important. If your collection matters, back it up before time, chemistry, or bad storage conditions make recovery impossible.
