Tesla to Prevent Door Openings with Blind Spot Detection for Enhanced Safety

Tesla is set to enhance vehicle safety with an innovative update in its upcoming 2024.44 software release, currently being trialed by select employees. This update introduces the Blind Spot Warning While Parked feature to North American Tesla owners, a system already available in a different form in China. With the aim of preventing unfortunate accidents involving suddenly opened car doors, this feature will become a handy addition ahead of the festive season.

This new safety system intelligently intervenes in situations where the driver intends to open a door while an unseen vehicle or cyclist is approaching. Positioned at the car’s rear left corner, these potential hazards might usually reside in the car’s blind spot, invisible in mirrors unless special accessories are used. Many cyclists have experienced painful run-ins with car doors flung open without warning. Similarly, drivers have faced damage when their door is literally swept away by a passing vehicle.

To mitigate such risks, Tesla’s Blind Spot Warning While Parked provides both audible and visual signals. If a threat is detected during an attempt to open a door, the system will flash a warning light, issue an audio alert, and prevent the door from opening with the initial button press. While this may initially seem like the technology is questioning the driver’s judgment, it can be a lifesaver, providing an extra moment to avoid collision.

Tesla advises that drivers wait momentarily for the object to pass before pressing the door button again to disable the alerts and open the door safely.

Currently, this Blind Spot Warning Light is a feature of Tesla’s more recent models, such as the Model 3 Highland refresh and the eagerly awaited Cybertruck. It’s anticipated that the Model Y Juniper facelift will also incorporate this safety measure. However, it’s yet to be determined if this feature will be present in the Model Y without the visual indication. Tesla continues to push the boundaries of automotive safety, prioritizing the protection of both their drivers and those sharing the road.
