Tesla Model Y Adds Vehicle-to-Load Power and Official Underseat Storage in the US
Tesla is making the Model Y more practical for everyday life, road trips, camping, and emergency situations. The company has expanded Vehicle-to-Load support to all Model Y Premium trims in the United States, giving owners a new way to power small appliances and devices directly from the electric SUV.
The feature had previously appeared on the Model Y Performance and the larger Model Y L, but it is now reaching more versions of Tesla’s best-selling crossover. With this update, the Model Y becomes more than just an electric vehicle for commuting. It can also act as a mobile power source for outdoor gear, tools, laptops, air pumps, mini fridges, and other 120V accessories.
However, the system is not completely plug-and-play. To use Vehicle-to-Load on the Model Y, owners need Tesla’s latest Gen 3 Mobile Connector along with the separate Outlet Adapter. The adapter, priced at $80 through the Tesla app, connects to the vehicle’s charge port and provides two household-style 120V outlets. The setup delivers up to 120V at 20 amps, which is enough for many common devices and light-duty equipment.
This is not the same as full Vehicle-to-Home backup power. Model Y owners should not expect it to power an entire house during an outage the way Tesla’s larger backup systems or Cybertruck Powershare can. Still, for camping trips, tailgating, worksite convenience, or charging essentials during a power cut, it adds a useful layer of flexibility.
The move also helps Tesla keep pace with other electric vehicle brands that have offered bidirectional power features for years. Vehicle-to-Load has become an increasingly attractive feature for EV shoppers, especially those who want their vehicle to do more than simply drive from one place to another. For Model Y buyers, this update makes the SUV feel more versatile and better suited for real-world adventures.
Tesla Model Y also gets official underseat storage trays
Power output is not the only practical upgrade arriving for the Model Y. Tesla has also introduced an official underseat storage tray designed to make better use of unused space beneath the front seats.
The Model Y’s clean, minimalist interior is one of its most recognizable features, but that simple layout can sometimes leave owners wishing for more small-item storage. Loose bottles, charging cables, sunglasses, wipes, and travel accessories can easily slide around the cabin, especially during sudden stops or sharp turns.
For a while, third-party accessory makers have filled that gap with underseat trays made from materials such as TPE and ABS plastic. These trays fit beneath the front seats and are accessed from the rear footwell, offering extra storage without interfering with rear passenger legroom or air vents.
Now Tesla has created its own version. The official Model Y Underseat Storage Tray is priced at $40 each and features a non-slip design to help keep items from rolling around. It also carries Tesla branding, which may appeal to owners who prefer factory accessories over aftermarket options.
While cheaper alternatives are available, Tesla’s official tray gives Model Y drivers a simple and tidy way to organize everyday items. It is not a flashy upgrade, but it solves a common problem in a practical way.
Together, the addition of Vehicle-to-Load support and official underseat storage makes the Tesla Model Y more useful for families, travelers, campers, and daily commuters. These are small changes, but they address the kind of everyday needs that can make an electric SUV easier to live with.
For anyone considering a Model Y, the latest updates add more value to an already popular EV. It can now carry more of your essentials, keep the cabin cleaner, and provide power when you need it away from home.
