System76, a prominent Linux hardware manufacturer known for both producing a range of computing devices and developing the well-received Linux distribution Pop!_OS, has recently updated its Serval WS (Workstation) notebook line. The updated Serval WS is now featuring the powerful Intel i9-14900HX processor, elevating its capabilities.
The Serval WS positions itself as a high-performance portable workstation, boasting a significant boost with the 24-core CPU that comprises 8 Performance (P) cores and 16 Efficiency (E) cores. Customers looking for graphics prowess can select from two options: the GeForce RTX 4060, with 3,072 CUDA cores, or the GeForce RTX 4070, offering a heftier 4,608 CUDA cores. These GPU choices complement the Intel Xe onboard graphics included in the system.
Starting with a base memory offering of 16GB DDR5-4800 RAM, System76 provides the flexibility to upgrade to as much as 64GB of DDR5-5200 RAM to accommodate more demanding tasks. Storage is similarly customizable, with a 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD included as standard, while options extend up to a sizable 4TB. The configurator also permits the addition of a second M.2 SSD for further expansion.
The Serval WS ensures sharp and smooth visuals with a selection of matte display options: a 15.6-inch FHD panel with a 165Hz refresh rate, a 17.3-inch QHD panel with an impressive 240Hz, and a 17.3-inch UHD display with a 144Hz refresh rate, catering to various user preferences for size and clarity.
It’s worth noting that the Serval WS is outfitted with a US QWERTY keyboard only. This could be a limitation for international customers who may need to resort to keyboard stickers for localization. Nevertheless, the pre-installed Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS offers easy adaptation to different languages, easing some of the localization concerns.
The notebook starts with a base price of $2,099. For international buyers, it’s important to consider the potential for additional shipping fees and import duties on top of the purchase price. The Serval WS can be customized and ordered directly through System76’s online store, allowing for a personalized configuration that meets specific user needs.
Overall, the updated System76 Serval WS notebook brings forth considerable performance for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With its robust CPU options, versatile GPU and memory configurations, and a trio of display choices, it competes effectively in the market for high-end portable workstations.
