Pop!_OS Cosmic Desktop Environment Release Delayed for Further Development

The excitement for System76’s own desktop environment, Cosmic DE, has been steadily growing within the tech community, especially among users of the Linux distribution Pop!_OS. However, the first alpha release of Cosmic, initially scheduled for March, has been postponed, according to a recent update from the development team.

System76 has decided to push back the alpha release to May instead of rolling out the first version this month. This delay aims to provide the developers with additional time to refine the features they want to incorporate into the Cosmic desktop environment. Their goal is to reach a point where the features are adequately prepared for public testing.

A distinct approach has been taken by System76 in the development of the Cosmic DE. Instead of releasing an early version that combines the Gnome desktop environment with a selection of Cosmic applications, the team aims to launch their desktop environment only when the core Cosmic applications have achieved a minimum viable product (MVP) status. This strategic choice implies that users will have to wait a bit longer but can expect a more cohesive and functional experience when the alpha does finally release.

Significant progress has been made on the core applications of the Cosmic environment. The development team has completed work on features such as hybrid graphics support, minimize and restore options, a new tiling applet, and input device settings. Currently, the focus is on developing the Cosmic Terminal, Cosmic Edit (a text editor), and Cosmic Files (the file manager), along with crafting new icons for apps and applets. The team is also working on enhancements like theming support and improved legibility in light mode, utilizing the new color management features in the iced toolkit.

In response to concerns from the community regarding the alpha release’s delay, one System76 developer explained that the overall release timeline remains unchanged. The full release is expected to coincide with Pop!_OS 24.04 at the end of summer 2024. This developer also expressed confidence in Cosmic’s stability, suggesting it may already surpass Gnome in this area, despite Gnome’s dedication to stability and simplicity.

As the tech community awaits the arrival of Pop!_OS 24.04, the anticipation for the new features and the introduction of the Cosmic desktop environment continues to build. It’s always an exciting moment when a new desktop environment is poised to make an entry in the Linux ecosystem.

For tech enthusiasts eager to create their own custom setups, consider building a DIY Steam Deck with a Linux distribution such as Pop!_OS paired with hardware like an Asus ROG Ally, or delve into programming using a Raspberry Pi 4 Extreme Kit.

The future of Pop!_OS and the Cosmic DE seems promising, and many are looking forward to experiencing what System76 has in store for the Linux community.
