Surf Browser Unveils Bluesky Integration in New Beta Release

Flipboard’s innovative browsing tool, Surf, is making waves by expanding its features and inviting users to explore a whole new way of engaging with social networks. This refreshed iteration of their beta software, charmingly named “Blue Wave,” now provides users the ability to integrate seamlessly with Bluesky, the up-and-coming social network. Through this cutting-edge app, users are empowered to log in with their Bluesky credentials and access all their Bluesky feeds, such as their following feed, discover feed, and even custom feeds they’ve curated on the Bluesky platform.

The integration with Surf extends beyond simple access. By providing an alternative to the Bluesky app, Surf allows you to actively engage with posts — liking, replying, and reposting — right within the app. Interactions such as likes and replies from Bluesky users flow fluidly into Surf, creating an interconnected web of social activities.

Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard, envisions Surf as a vital tool for unifying various social platforms such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads. He expresses that the current surge of AI-generated content dominating centralized social media makes the a la carte approach of selecting quality sources through tools like Surf and RSS feeds increasingly important. This method champions authentic human connections over algorithmically produced content.

To make newcomer customization journeys smoother, Surf has introduced a new beta feature — a setup wizard that guides users through creating their own unique home feeds. From integrating posts from networks like Mastodon and Bluesky to selecting specialized feeds like Bluesky’s “Popular with Friends” or “Discover,” Surf offers unparalleled customization. For those looking to tailor content further, filters are available to hide specific topics, ensuring a more personalized and relevant browsing experience.

Surf’s strength lies in its ability to help users build specialized feeds, interweaving posts from diverse networks and RSS feeds. This means users can bring together content from news sites, blogs, podcasts, and YouTube channels into a singular, all-encompassing feed. McCue, for instance, enjoys a custom feed titled “Tech Builders and Thinkers,” which amalgamates content from high-profile accounts on Mastodon, Bluesky, and YouTube, allowing users to explore content centered around their interests without platform constraints.

Customizability is key in Surf. Users can adjust the appearance and layout of their feeds, choosing cover images, background colors, and the default viewing tabs ranging from “Discuss” for a Twitter-like appearance to media-focused vistas like “Look,” “Listen,” “Watch,” or “Read.”

Innovations like Surf empower users to enjoy various content formats from Bluesky without needing separate TikTok-like or Instagram-like apps. This expansive approach offers users a more versatile experience that transcends content from just one platform.

The introduction of the Surf Blue Wave beta was showcased at the SXSW conference. It will soon be accessible to current testers, with the company planning to expand access to new beta participants. To extend its reach beyond Apple’s TestFlight limitations, Surf plans to transition from an iOS-exclusive experience to web accessibility, making this pioneering app available to a wider audience.

As Surf evolves, it’s set to transform how users interact across social platforms, offering a refreshed, curated, and customizable digital experience.
