Starlink expands its app with a new Event Log to make outages easier to understand and troubleshoot
After two major global “Starlink down” incidents in recent weeks, the satellite internet provider has upgraded its mobile app. What used to be a simple Outage Log is now a fuller Event Log that tracks a wide range of connectivity issues, not just complete service interruptions. The goal is straightforward: give subscribers clearer insight into what’s causing slowdowns or dropouts, and reduce back-and-forth with customer support.
Previously, the app only showed the time your terminal had zero connectivity. The new Event Log records more granular network events that can affect real-world performance, including those that don’t involve a system-wide outage. That means you can pinpoint whether a glitch was caused by your setup at home, a local terminal hiccup, or a wider network problem.
What the new Starlink Event Log can track
– Major satellite connectivity disruptions
– Router status changes, such as being disconnected or switched off
– Significant packet loss that can cause video call stutters or lag
– Terminal reboots, including Starlink Mini units used off-grid or in remote areas
Starlink says the information in the Event Log mirrors the internal view used by its tech support team. More event types will be added over time, turning the app into a more powerful self-diagnosis tool. For everyday use, that means fewer mysteries behind a frozen video call, a sudden dip in gaming frame rates, or random buffering while streaming.
Why this upgrade matters now
– Recent network incidents underscored the need for better transparency. One outage followed a firmware update to ground stations, while another was triggered by a geomagnetic storm.
– Starlink’s download speeds are trending upward thanks to expanding satellite capacity, and the subscriber base is growing fast. As more users come online, having detailed logs helps isolate issues quickly.
– With a push toward a gigabit-class upgrade, deeper visibility into network behavior will be essential for troubleshooting and maintaining consistent performance.
Practical benefits for subscribers
– Faster troubleshooting: See whether the problem is on your end (for example, a powered-off router) or a broader network event.
– Clearer context: Timestamps and event types help you correlate issues with what you were doing, like joining a video meeting or starting a game session.
– Smoother support: Because the log mirrors what support sees, it should shorten time to resolution if you need assistance.
Bottom line: The new Event Log turns the Starlink app into a more insightful diagnostic companion. By surfacing both major outages and smaller but impactful network events, it helps users understand—and often solve—connectivity hiccups before they derail work, calls, streaming, or gaming.
