Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic May Not Arrive Until 2030—Long After the KOTOR Remake

Anyone hoping for a major update on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake during The Game Awards came away surprised. Instead of long-awaited remake news, the show debuted a trailer for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new project that appears to be loosely connected to the classic KOTOR era rather than a straightforward continuation of the remake storyline.

The abrupt reveal may have a simple explanation: the game could be far earlier in development than most people realized. Industry insider Jason Schreier commented on social media that Arcanaut Studios only partnered with Lucasfilm Games this year to begin work on the title. With the studio effectively ramping up in 2025, he suggested that a Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release date around 2030 may be the most realistic scenario, adding that “2030 is an optimistic guess.”

That kind of timeline instantly changes how fans view the announcement. If the prediction is even close, Fate of the Old Republic may not land during the PlayStation 6 generation at all. Schreier even floated the idea that it could end up as a PlayStation 7-era release, a possibility that didn’t sit well with players who are already tired of ultra-long waits between reveals and launches.

One reason the project is drawing attention is the talent attached to it. Casey Hudson, who helped shape the original KOTOR, is returning as game director. For many longtime Star Wars RPG fans, that’s a promising sign. Still, modern AAA development is rarely quick, even with an experienced leader.

Why does it take so long for big games to come out now? As blockbuster budgets rise and player expectations climb, development timelines have expanded. Games are bigger, more detailed, and more complex to build across multiple platforms. Yet publishers and studios continue to announce titles early at huge events to build momentum, attract funding, and sometimes get ahead of leaks. The downside is familiar: players wait years without meaningful gameplay updates, and sometimes projects hit major turbulence along the way.

Star Wars games have seen that turbulence firsthand. Several high-profile projects have disappeared over the years, including Star Wars: 1313, which was shelved after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. And long before that, plans for KOTOR 3 were reportedly halted back in 2005 due to financial concerns. Those examples help explain why fans are cautiously excited about Fate of the Old Republic while also bracing for a long, uncertain road to launch.

For now, the best-case scenario for eager fans is simply more to see sooner rather than later, even if the release itself is far off. The Game Awards also included a trailer for Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a separate title currently targeting a 2026 release, offering something nearer-term for players looking for fresh Star Wars content.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is still said to be in development at Saber Interactive. However, after its big debut at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, the project has faced setbacks and has shown few encouraging signs since, keeping many fans in wait-and-see mode.

The takeaway is bittersweet: Fate of the Old Republic has exciting names behind it and a marquee Star Wars setting, but if insider expectations are accurate, the galaxy may be a long way from launch day.
