Spotify’s New ‘User Notes’ Feature Turns Songs Into Personal Memory Capsules

Spotify is making playlists more personal with a new feature called User Notes, allowing listeners to add custom notes to individual songs. The update gives users a simple way to capture the memories, feelings, and stories behind the tracks they save, turning playlists into something closer to a personal music journal.

With User Notes, Spotify users can write short captions for songs in playlists they created or playlists that include tracks they added. These notes can explain why a song matters, where they first heard it, or what moment it reminds them of. A listener might add a note saying a track played during a summer road trip, a favorite vacation, a workout milestone, or a first date.

The goal is to make Spotify playlists feel more meaningful than a simple list of songs. Music is often tied to personal memories, and the new feature gives users a way to preserve those moments directly inside the app. Instead of relying only on titles, artists, and album covers, listeners can now add context that makes each track feel more connected to their own life.

Spotify says the feature is designed to bring more personality and storytelling into playlists. Over time, a playlist filled with notes could become a timeline of important memories, moods, and discoveries. For users who carefully curate playlists for themselves, friends, or followers, User Notes could make sharing music feel more expressive and emotional.

The feature also gives Spotify another way to stand out in the competitive music streaming market. While music recommendations, playlists, and discovery tools remain central to streaming platforms, User Notes adds a more personal layer by letting listeners document the story behind their favorite songs.

User Notes is available to Spotify users aged 16 and older on both free and premium plans in select markets.

To use the feature, open a playlist you created or a playlist that includes songs you added. Tap the three-dot menu next to a track, then choose “Add note.” After writing and saving the note, it will appear with the song. If the playlist is visible to others, the note can also be seen by anyone who has access to that playlist, with the user’s name connected to their profile.

Alongside User Notes, Spotify also introduced a new Running Mode for premium subscribers in select countries. This feature is designed for runners and automatically plays music based on different stages of a run. It can select tracks according to a listener’s preferences and pace, helping create a more personalized workout experience.

Together, these updates show Spotify’s continued push toward deeper personalization. User Notes focuses on the emotional side of music, while Running Mode aims to make listening more responsive to real-life activity. For playlist lovers, the new notes feature could be a small but powerful way to make every song feel more personal.
