After weeks of eager anticipation, Spotify’s year-in-review feature, Spotify Wrapped, has left many subscribers feeling less than thrilled. Once a highly anticipated event, this year’s Wrapped has been met with criticism, with users voicing their disappointment and even dubbing it as “boring” or a “flop.”
The main point of contention appears to be Spotify’s decision to emphasize an AI-powered podcast in Wrapped, overshadowing the creative and insightful data-driven stories people have enjoyed in previous years. In the past, Wrapped would delve into quirky personality assessments, highlight the town that matches your music taste, describe your “audio aura,” and even gamify your listening history. This year, users lament the absence of these engaging features and more detailed statistics, like top music genres and podcasts. Spotify has not commented on what guided their decision-making for this year’s feature set.
On social media platforms, especially X, claims of dissatisfaction are circulating widely under the hashtag #SpotifyWrapped2024. Many users have shared their disappointment, describing the experience as “underwhelming” and a “disappointment,” springing more criticisms than applause. A prominent post criticizing Wrapped has already amassed over 108,000 likes, reflecting a significant discontent.
In a bold move, Spotify banked on its collaboration with Google, integrating an AI podcast into the Wrapped experience. This change, however, was not universally appreciated. Complaints noted a lack of “quirky interactive bits” and confusion over the “Your Music Evolution” feature, which aimed to track users’ changing tastes using niche genres from the Daylist.
Fans of previous versions of Wrapped were left wanting when it came to the detail of genre insights. The Top Podcasts feature also caused frustration, as it wasn’t consistently available for all users. Spotify has mentioned that to qualify for Top Podcasts, users must have listened to at least 60 seconds of two different episodes across two days for a minimum of two shows.
Another issue was that many users couldn’t locate their 2024 Wrapped playlist. Although it’s tucked away in the Spotify app as “Your Top Songs 2024,” it is not directly linked from the Wrapped experience itself, causing some users to miss it altogether.
This year’s graphics and design were also a point of contention, receiving mixed reactions. Some users criticized the artwork as “simple” or “mid,” while others found them appealing.
The AI podcast integration was met with mixed reviews. While some were captivated by the technology, unfamiliarity with Google’s NotebookLM caused discomfort for others. Although Spotify may have hoped for social media to buzz with users sharing their AI-driven podcasts, platforms like TikTok are instead flooded with critiques saying the feature didn’t meet expectations, with AI seen as a possible culprit for the decline.
Some users speculate that the disappointment is partly due to Spotify’s layoffs earlier this year, linking the scaled-back Wrapped experience to decreased staffing and an increased reliance on AI. The company had cut 2,300 employees in 2023, a move CEO Daniel Ek admitted affected day-to-day operations more than anticipated.
Even though Wrapped is seen as a once-a-year highlight, Spotify revealed it plays a role in their daily operations, with work on the next year’s edition already underway. Teams from across the company, including marketing, product, music, podcasts, and audiobooks, contribute to its creation. However, Spotify hasn’t disclosed how many people are involved in bringing Wrapped to life.
When questioned about the criteria for this year’s selections, Spotify’s response was, “Every year we look to bring a new and exciting experience to Wrapped for listeners. It’s part of the secret sauce of Wrapped.”
