FromSoftware, the creative minds behind the acclaimed Elden Ring, seem to be charting new territories rather than revisiting past successes. In a recent chat with Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head honcho revealed that expanding the Elden Ring universe isn’t on the studio’s immediate agenda. Instead, FromSoftware is focusing its energy on a number of exciting projects, some of which feature directors other than Miyazaki himself.
Since its debut in 2022, Elden Ring, along with its compelling expansion Shadow of the Erdtree in 2024, has garnered a treasure trove of accolades. However, fans eager for more from this gripping franchise might have to wait, as there are no plans for further expansions at the moment. Interestingly, in a past interview, Miyazaki mentioned that Shadow of the Erdtree would be the standalone DLC for Elden Ring. Its vast scope has even prompted changes in the criteria for The Game Awards, allowing it to be considered for a game of the year nomination.
FromSoftware’s track record shows that their previous Souls-based titles often received multiple expansions post-launch. However, this trend seems to have altered after Bloodborne, which only had a single addition, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which had none. With the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoftware is now channeling its efforts towards fresh ventures.
Miyazaki hints at a broader scope of genres in their upcoming releases, sparking curiosity among fans. While the specifics remain under wraps, enthusiasts hope for a sequel to the beloved Bloodborne, though such a development seems unlikely. There’s speculation about a potential follow-up to Sekiro, with its unique combat style that sets it apart from previous titles. Alternatively, a new Armored Core installment might be on the horizon without the typical decade-long interval that fans have come to expect.
Clearly, FromSoftware’s commitment to innovation keeps fans excited and eager about what’s next in their ever-expanding universe of gaming excellence.
