Spotify Adds AI-Powered Running Mode for Premium Users on iPhone
Spotify is rolling out a new running mode designed for listeners who want music that matches the pace, style, and structure of their workouts. The feature brings a more personalized fitness experience to the Spotify mobile app by building running playlists around different stages of a run, preferred music tastes, and target tempo.
The new mode is available inside Spotify’s Fitness Hub for Premium subscribers. Users can choose from 25 preset running options, making it easier to find a soundtrack that fits the workout they have planned. Options include interval runs, steady runs, pyramid-style sessions, and other structured running formats.
Spotify also lets users fine-tune the experience by adjusting the run duration, beats per minute, and preferred music style. That means runners can create a session that feels more aligned with their energy level, pace goals, and listening habits instead of relying on a standard playlist.
In addition to selecting music, Spotify’s running mode can provide audio cues for different phases of a workout. These spoken prompts are designed to guide runners through transitions, helping them know when to pick up the pace, slow down, or move into another part of the session. At launch, the audio cue feature is available only in English.
The feature builds on Spotify’s growing use of artificial intelligence in playlist creation. Over the past year, the company has been testing playlist tools that use prompts to generate personalized listening sessions. Spotify noticed that many users were already creating playlists for fitness, gym sessions, and running, which helped inspire this dedicated running experience.
Spotify has also been expanding further into the fitness space. Earlier this year, the company introduced fitness-related content through a collaboration with Peloton, showing its interest in becoming more than just a music and podcast platform for workouts.
The launch also arrives shortly after Strava ended Spotify integration within its Record feature, creating an opportunity for Spotify to offer runners a more direct workout-focused listening option inside its own app.
Spotify’s new running mode begins rolling out Wednesday for Premium users on iOS. It is available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
With personalized music selection, tempo controls, workout presets, and guided audio cues, Spotify’s running mode could become a useful tool for runners who want a smarter soundtrack for every mile.
